Τη χρονιά την κάνουμε εμείς καλή, δεν είναι από μόνη της. Όπως ακριβώς η συμπεριφορά μας δεν καθορίζεται από τις εξωτερικές συνθήκες, αλλά από τις εσωτερικές αποφάσεις.

It is spoken by the narrator, Alexey Ivanovich, in Chapter XVI, as he is caught up in the intense, self-destructive allure of gambling. This line encapsulates his obsessive and delusional belief in winning big at the roulette table, despite his past experiences with ruin.

Dostoyevsky’s visits to (Bad) Homburg occurred mainly during the early to mid-1860s, directly inspiring the portrayal of gambling addiction and the spa town atmosphere in The Gambler, which he published in 1866 under tight deadlines caused by financial strain linked to gambling losses.

Το βιβλίο "Ο Παίκτης" (The Gambler) του Fyodor Dostoyevsky δημοσιεύτηκε το 1867. Πρόκειται για ένα σύντομο μυθιστόρημα που πραγματεύεται τις σκοτεινές όψεις του τζόγου και βασίζεται στις προσωπικές εμπειρίες του συγγραφέα με τον τζόγο. Ο Dostoyevsky ολοκλήρωσε το έργο σε πολύ σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα, το 1866, προκειμένου να καλύψει χρέη που είχε δημιουργήσει από τον τζόγο.​

Το μυθιστόρημα αναπτύσσεται γύρω από την ιστορία του νεαρού καθηγητή και την ψυχολογία του τζόγου, παρουσιάζοντας ταυτόχρονα την αγωνία, την εξάρτηση και τις κοινωνικές διαστάσεις του φαινομένου. Είναι ένα από τα πιο γνωστά έργα του και θεωρείται κλασική πένα της ρωσικής λογοτεχνίας, σε μεγάλο βαθμό επειδή αντανακλά την προσωπική εμπειρία του συγγραφέα με το πάθος για τον τυχερό παιχνίδι.
