Berliner Mauer anniversary

On 15 June 1961, First Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party and DDR State Council chairman Walter Ulbricht stated in an international press conference, "Niemand hat die Absicht, eine Mauer zu errichten!" (No one has the intention of erecting a wall!). It was the first time the colloquial term Mauer (wall) had been used in this context...
On Saturday, 12 August 1961, the leaders of the DDR attended a garden party at a government guesthouse in Döllnsee, in a wooded area to the north of East Berlin. There Ulbricht signed the order to close the border and erect a wall. At midnight, the police and units of the East German army began to close the border and, by Sunday morning, 13 August, the border with West Berlin was closed. East German troops and workers had begun to tear up streets running alongside the border to make them impassable to most vehicles and to install barbed wire entanglements and fences along the 156 kilometres around the three western sectors, and the 43 kilometres that divided West and East Berlin.
The barrier was built slightly inside East Berlin or East German territory to ensure that it did not encroach on West Berlin at any point. Later, it was built up into the Wall proper, the first concrete elements and large blocks being put in place on 17 August. During the construction of the Wall, National People's Army (NVA) and Combat Groups of the Working Class (KdA) soldiers stood in front of it with orders to shoot anyone who attempted to defect. Additionally, chain fences, walls, minefields and other obstacles were installed along the length of East Germany's western border with West Germany proper. A huge no man's land was cleared to provide a clear line of fire at fleeing refugees...

The Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat (Russian: Собор Покрова пресвятой Богородицы, что на Рву), popularly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral (Russian: Собор Василия Блаженного), is a Russian Orthodox cathedral erected on the Red Square in Moscow in 1555–1561. Built on the order of Ivan IV of Russia to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan, it marks the geometric center of the city and the hub of its growth since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600.

The original building, known as "Trinity Church" and later "Trinity Cathedral", contained eight side churches arranged around the ninth, central church of Intercession; the tenth church was erected in 1588 over the grave of venerated local saint Vasily (Basil). In the 16th and the 17th centuries the cathedral, perceived as the earthly symbol of the Heavenly City, was popularly known as the "Jerusalem" and served as an allegory of the Jerusalem Temple in the annual Palm Sunday parade attended by the Patriarch of Moscow and the tsar.

The building's design, shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, has no analogues in Russian architecture. The cathedral has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.

Έρχεται το καλοκαίρι και μαζί του η πιθανότητα καύσωνα, που είναι ιδιαίτερα αισθητός και δυσάρεστος στα μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα – εκεί που παρατηρούνται αστικές θερμικές νησίδες. Η αστική θερμική νησίδα είναι ένα φαινόμενο αστικού κλίματος κατά το οποίο υπάρχει σημαντική διαφορά θερμοκρασίας μεταξύ του κέντρου των πόλεων και των προαστίων και της γύρω υπαίθρου, ιδιαίτερα τις νυχτερινές ώρες. Η εμφάνιση της αστικής θερμικής νησίδας επιτείνει τη δυσφορία των κατοίκων των αστικών κέντρων σε περιόδους υψηλής θερμοκρασίας. Μάλιστα για ανθρώπους με προβλήματα υγείας δεν υπάρχει απλώς θέμα δυσφορίας, αφού σε ακραίες περιπτώσεις αντιμετωπίζουν και τον κίνδυνο θανάτου.
Το καλοκαίρι του 2010 είναι το δεύτερο στη σειρά, που μια κοινοπραξία ευρωπαϊκών ιδρυμάτων μελετά τις ιδιότητες των φαινομένων καύσωνα και των αστικών θερμικών νησίδων σε μεγάλες ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις χρησιμοποιώντας δορυφορικά μάτια - ή μήπως θα έπρεπε να πούμε δορυφορικά θερμόμετρα;
Δορυφορικά θερμόμετρα; Καλό κι αυτό, θα μου πείτε … Από πότε μετράμε τον πυρετό της Γης από το διάστημα; Η αλήθεια είναι ότι χρειάστηκαν αρκετά χρονάκια έρευνας και τεχνολογικής ανάπτυξης για να φτάσουμε στο σημείο να θερμομετρούμε τον πλανήτη μας δορυφορικά.

Ελληνικότητα σημαίνει νοσταλγία

Ως Έλλην της ημι-διασποράς (έζησα τα μισά χρόνια της μέχρι τώρα ζωής μου εκτός Ελλάδος), είχα ορίσει παλιά, το 1963, την Ελλάδα ως χώρα όπου όσοι ζουν θέλουν να φύγουν και όσοι φεύγουν ένα θέλουν, ένα ποθούν: να επιστρέψουν.
Τώρα, έπειτα από πενήντα χρόνια σχεδόν, έχω πεισθεί ότι το αίσθημα ή η συνείδηση της ελληνικότητας συνοψίζεται σε δύο λέξεις που καταλήγουν σε μία: στο άλγος του νόστου, δηλαδή τη νοσταλγία για κάτι που δεν υπάρχει και θα το θέλαμε πολύ να υπάρχει.

Οι όροι «Βυζάντιο» και «Βυζαντινός», που περιγράφουν την περίοδο της μεσαιωνικής ιστορίας των χωρών που αποτέλεσαν την αυτοκρατορία, την οποία σήμερα ονομάζουμε καταχρηστικά Βυζαντινή, εφευρέθηκαν από τους πρώτους μελετητές της εποχής και της περιοχής αυτής. Καθολικοί ιερωμένοι, οι οποίοι αρνήθηκαν, για λόγους ιδεολογικούς, να ονομάσουν την αυτοκρατορία των σχισματικών, πάντα κατ’ αυτούς, ορθοδόξων χριστιανών, με το επίσημο όνομά της, που ήταν το Ρώμη και ρωμαϊκή πολιτεία. Το ευγενές αυτό όνομα παρέπεμπε, έλεγαν, στην καθολική Ρώμη και όχι στην Κωνσταντινούπολη… Ρώμη, λοιπόν, ονομαζόταν η αυτοκρατορία του Βυζαντίου – οι «έξω Ρώμης» είναι οι εκτός αυτοκρατορίας για τους Βυζαντινούς –, Ρωμανία τα εδάφη που την απαρτίζουν, και βέβαια Ρωμαϊκή πολιτεία, Ρωμαϊκό κράτος και Ρωμαίοι οι πολίτες του [σημ.: εξ ου και Ρωμιοσύνη και Ρωμιός]. «Πιστός εν Χριστώ τω Θεώ βασιλεύς και αυτοκράτωρ Ρωμαίων» ο κάθε αυτοκράτορας· αυτός είναι ο τίτλος του βυζαντινού αυτοκράτορα ως το τέλος της αυτοκρατορίας, ως το 1453, τίτλος που αντικατέστησε το Imperator μετά την επικράτηση της ελληνικής γλώσσας…. Επεκτάθηκα στο πρόβλημα του ονόματος … για να σημειώσω αυτό που με κάποια υπερβολή έγραψε ο (ιστορικός και βυζαντινολόγος) John Bagnell Bury: «Το Βυζάντιο δεν υπήρξε ποτέ, η Ρώμη έπεσε το 1453».
