... Το σέλας εμφανίζεται συνήθως σε μια περιοχή σαν δαχτυλίδι γύρω από τον Βόρειο και το Νότιο Πόλο, πάνω από πόλεις σαν το Fairbanks στην Αλάσκα, το Tromsø στη Νορβηγία και την Kiruna στη Σουηδία. Το θέαμα αρχίζει με μια αχνή λάμψη που φωσφορίζει πέρα μακριά στον ορίζοντα. Ξαφνικά φωτοβολεί μια αψίδα που κινείται γοργά στον ουρανό και ολοένα εμφανίζονται κι άλλες φωτεινές αψίδες που ακολουθούν την πρώτη. Μικρά κύματα και μπούκλες φωτός κινούνται κατά μήκος των αψίδων. Λίγο αργότερα ζούμε μια δραματική αλλαγή στον ουρανό. Ένας καταιγισμός φωτός από πάνω μας σχηματίζει αεικίνητες ακτίνες και αλλόκοτους φωτεινούς σχηματισμούς, που θυμίζουν κουρτίνες που σαλεύουν στο χάδι ενός απόκοσμου ανέμου...

(Mis-)Guided by Scientific Prejudice

Volcanoes and Auroras

Sometimes both heaven and Earth erupt: In Iceland  in 1991, the volcano Hekla erupted at the same time that auroras  were visible overhead (picture below). Hekla, one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, has erupted at least 20 times over the past millennium, sometimes causing great destruction. The last eruption occurred only two years ago but caused only minor damage. The green auroral band occurred fortuitously about 100 kilometers above the erupting lava.

HAARP

HAARP σημαίνει High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program, δηλαδή Πρόγραμμα Ενεργού Σελαϊκής Έρευνας σε Υψηλές Συχνότητες. Το HAARP στην ουσία είναι ένας ανοιχτός φούρνος μικροκυμάτων που αντί για φαγητό θερμαίνει την ιονόσφαιρα, δηλαδή την συνοριακή περιοχή μεταξύ ατμόσφαιρας και διαστήματος. Η καρδιά του συστήματος είναι μια συστοιχία ραντάρ που εκπέμπει ραδιοκύματα. Τα ραδιοκύματα θερμαίνουν την ιονόσφαιρα σε ύψος μεταξύ 100 και 350 χιλιομέτρων επιταχύνοντας ελεύθερα ηλεκτρόνια. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο μπορεί να επιτευχθεί δόνηση των μαγνητικών γραμμών του γήινου μαγνητικού πεδίου στην ιονόσφαιρα και το εγγύς διάστημα, κάνοντας το όλο σύστημα ένα είδος διαστημικής άρπας!

In Middle-Age central Europe, the Northern Lights were considered a bad omen. They warned of illness, plague and death. On the contrary, up in the North, in Scandinavia, people’s conceptions were more characterized by wonder and awe for this impressive phenomenon. One was warned to step carefully during auroral displays and in no way should the Northern Lights be frightened by waving, whistling, staring or by showing any other form of disrespect …

Ancient Aurora

There are many ancient references to the aurora, from the Chinese, the Jews and the Greeks. The first attempt for a rational explanation of the bright celestial appearance is often credited to Aristotle. Instead of invoking supernatural powers or beasts, he described the Northern Lights in his book Metereologia as a light resembling a shining cloud.

However, the credit for the first rational, non-mythical description of the aurora belongs to two Greek philosophers from Asia Minor (nowadays Turkey), who lived in the 6th century B.C., i.e. some 200 years before Aristotle: Anaximenes of Miletus (c. 585-528 B.C.) and Xenophanes of Colophon (c. 570-475 BC). 

Anaximenes was a pioneer in the revolutionary new approach to the nature of human intellect that came to be known as natural philosophy; and for him, fundamental reality was material and mechanical. This is the viewpoint we have inherited as "scientific". Xenophanes, the founder of the Eleatic school of philosophy, wrote of "moving accumulations of burning clouds". At about the same time, Plutarch gave a clear description of the Northern Lights, but it was probably a quotation from missing writings of Anaxagoras: "there was an enormous and furious figure in the sky. It was like a flaming cloud, which did not stay at its position but moved windingly and regularly"…

Βόρειο Σέλας

Τι ακριβώς συμβαίνει λοιπόν; Στο «ρετιρέ» της ατμόσφαιρας, σε 100 με 200 χιλιόμετρα ύψος, καταφθάνουν ηλεκτρόνια που έχουν επιταχυνθεί στο διάστημα, συγκρούονται με άτομα και μόρια οξυγόνου και αζώτου και τα φέρνουν σε ενεργειακά διεγερμένη κατάσταση. Καθώς όμως αυτή η κατάσταση είναι ασταθής, τα άτομα και μόρια επιστρέφουν στην ενεργειακά χαμηλότερη (και σταθερότερη) κατάσταση, απελευθερώνοντας την παραπανίσια ενέργεια σαν ακτινοβολία. Αυτή η ακτινοβολία είναι το φως του σέλαος. Το χρώμα, η μορφή και η ένταση του σέλαος εξαρτώνται τόσο από τις ηλεκτρομαγνητικές δυνάμεις που εκτοξεύουν τα ηλεκτρόνια από το διάστημα προς την ατμόσφαιρα, όσο και από το είδος των ατόμων και μορίων που χτυπούν, καθώς και από το ύψος στο οποίο τα χτυπούν…

Aurora Borealis

… Rays of light shoot down from space, forming light draperies, which spread all over the sky. They really compare to draperies or curtains that are flickering in the wind. They also remind us of Swan Lake and other dance performances. We can see a violet and a red trimming at the lower and upper ends, or the colours all mixed together, woven into each other. The curtains disappear and form all over again by new rays of light shooting down from space. Above our head, we can see rays converging to a point in the sky, forming what is called an auroral corona…
